My book, fate, and pie
I have some news this week that involves a chapter in my book, fate, and pie.
The Writers’ Colony at Dairy Hollow is an esteemed retreat center here in Eureka Springs. Writers from more than a dozen countries have found their muse during residencies at its wooded setting in a quiet section of town.
The center even has a culinary suite that is a cookbook author’s “pimp my kitchen” dream. It’s the only one of its kind in the nation targeted to food writers.
One repeat resident, Kat Robinson, is currently writing a pie cookbook. She bakes fifty pies each visit! If your first thought was, “Oh man, I wish I could get a taste of that,” you’re in luck. Robinson hosts a pie tasting and talk this Saturday. Tickets are available at writerscolony.org.
How does this involve my book?
Well, the Writers’ Colony was started by author Crescent Dragonwagon, who will be featured in my book for that reason, among other accomplishments. (Yes, that’s her legal name, and yes, how she got it will be in the book.)
I thought it would be fitting if I wrote that chapter during a residency of my own at the Writers’ Colony.
And fate?
As I was planning the residency, I learned of an opportunity to become involved with the Writers’ Colony at a deeper level.
As of yesterday, I have the honor of serving as a member of the nonprofit’s board of directors.
I am extremely grateful to Eureka Springs Historical Museum Director Jeff Danos and Writers’ Colony board member K.J. Zumwalt for recommending me, board member Laura Hahn for explaining what it would involve, and the rest of the board for a warm welcome.
The coincidental timing helped confirm the feeling that this new role is the right step at the right time. Of course, being right is not the same as being easy. The nonprofit has a “working board” who volunteer their time and skills to ensure that one of Eureka’s cultural treasures continues to thrive.
To be honest, I’m not even sure yet how I’ll juggle this along with everything else. But I am sure I can figure it out, so I’m all in. Even if it means overindulging in pie once in a while.
